Her Sylveon responds to the praise with a happy yip, preening as her trainer showers her with compliments. Luka herself isn't much of a battler, so it's not as though they're dominating the competition. Still, the fact that she and her partner have lasted this long is a feat in and of itself, as far as she's concerned.[break][break]

They approach their next match in high spirits, waving in tandem at the man who waits for them on the other side of the field. Luka's smile is bright and bubbly, and her Sylveon's ribbons form a cute little heart to greet him.[break][break]

What a relief! It would be terribly embarrassing to keep a cute guy like this waiting. “I’m Luka…and this is Sugar!” She gestures over to her Sylveon, who’s ribbons have uncurled in order to wave over at their opponents. “Your Pikachu is soooo cute, by the way!” [break][break]

This is the second Pikachu they’ve faced so far. And it seems like Aaron also uses Dynamax. Luka wonders, idly, if this guy and ollie morales are friends. [break][break]

“But gosh, are you sure? That’s very kind of you, monsieur!” [break][break]

She beams at him as Sugar steps onto the field with careful, delicate steps. Even her first move is adorably executed: a dazzling gleam is launched towards the Pikachu, pretty and sparkling pink, like a bubbling rosé. [break][break]

luka chêne has that bubblegum sweet personality that makes heat spread across his face. nevertheless, he persists in his cool guy persona with a dismissive, "yeah, no problem."[break][break]his pikachu hunkers down as the sylveon steps onto the field. her beady eyes follow the fairy-type's delicate movements until the dazzling gleam blinds both her and her trainer. aaron raises a hand against its brilliance, but his pikachu can only close her eyes and hope her retaliatory thunderbolt hits its mark. It's a shame she can't see the blush from here, because that kind of gap-moe is such a weakness. As it is, Aaron manages to maintain his cool facade, and if there wasn't a battle going on perhaps Luka would be swooning a little more.[break][break]

The two attacks clash and at the end of it, both parties are still left standing. In fact, it seems that they'd cancelled each other out. Sugar blinks a little as the light begins to fade, but she quickly springs back into action. This clearly hadn't worked, so they have to try something else![break][break]

Blinding light is replaced by darkness; Sugar creates a shadow ball and launches it into the air. It spins once before she reaches up with her ribbons and spikes it right towards Pikachu, like throwing a volleyball.

"what the."[break][break]aaron has never seen something like this in the tournament so far. the attacks cancel out, leaving both pokemon with full health according to his vital gear. he doesn't believe it, hitting the butt of his palm against the piece of tech a couple times to no avail. [break][break]luka chêne 's sylveon spikes a shadow ball at his pikachu. it hits the mark, sending the pikachu tumbling head-over-paws backwards towards her trainer. she gets up, shakes the dust out of her fur, and scampers forward to continue the fight with determined bounds.
[break][break]aaron raises his dynamax band and activates it. his pikachu grows to a size that rivals the lilycove skyscrapers in the background. [break][break]piii, she growls, raising a foot and bringing it down in a max strike.[break][break]

Her Sylveon darts nimbly around, trying to avoid a direct strike from the giant foot. Getting stomped on like that would probably smash her flat! The ground shakes and her footing is unsteady, but she still manages to fire another dazzling gleam towards the Pikachu.[break][break]

Facing off against such a big opponent is pretty intimidating, but at least at this size, there's no way to avoid the attack!

aaron has to plant his feet as his gigantamax pikachu stomps down on nothing, shaking the battlefield with the seismic power of an earthquake. luka chêne 's sylveon is frustratingly nimble, making aaron second-guess his decision to dynamax his pokemon. he turns his head away from the dazzling gleam — how many times have people used dazzling gleam in this fucking tournament? — and orders his pikachu to use g-max volt crash. [break][break]the giant rat channels electricity into her body, benefitting from thundurus' storm overhead. after a moment, she raises her arms and releases it, unleashing bolts of lighting across the field. [break][break]

Sugar's dazzling gleam bounces off the Dynamax Pikachu with all the efficacy of throwing glitter at a building. She hisses in frustration and starts to prepare another attack, but thunder strikes before she can. Despite her best efforts at dodging, the entire field is abuzz with electricity, and she's tossed backwards by a particularly strong bolt.[break][break]

"You and your Pikachu are so strong!" Luka calls from across the field. Dynamaxing really is impressive...maybe she should try it sometime. But would her Pokemon like it? She stares up at the giant Pikachu, wondering how she feels about becoming the size of a blimp. Is it scary? Does it hurt?[break][break]

These are things she can consider after the battle. For now, they need to focus on winning this thing.[break][break]

"B-but we aren't going to give up! C'mon, Sugar! Let's give it our best!"[break][break]

It's easy for her to say when she's not the one fighting, but to Luka's credit her sygna suit helps. Electricity still crackles around Sugar as she gets to her feet, responding to the cheers with a determined yip. She conjures a springtide storm next, and the stormy air begins to churn as a sakura-infused whirlwind blows towards Aaron's Pikachu.

aaron rolls his shoulders with a casual, "i know."[break][break]luka chêne 's pep talk seems to work — her sylveon whips up a strong springtide storm buffets his gigantamax pikachu. she scrunches her face up as the squall tugs at her fur and threatens to pull even the colossus off her feet. the one consolation is that it smells pretty good, especially compared to lilycove city's cologne of sewage and saltwater.[break][break]as the storm dissipates, so does her gigantamax power. red energy envelopes the pikachu, then she shrinks and shrinks until she's smaller than her opponent once more. [break][break]

Someone else might find his dismissive reply rude, but to Luka, it seems so cool. She's always had questionable taste.[break][break]

But while she's busy swooning the battle presses on. Sugar blinks in surprise when her opponent is reduced back to rat size, and the winds she'd conjured begin to fade. All that's left is a lingering perfume and a few petals on the ground.[break][break]

She's back on equal footing with the Pikachu, so to speak. Her ribbons twitch as she summons another shadow ball and hoists it aloft, then throws it at Pikachu again. She's having some fun with the battle now; if the stakes weren't high, it would make for a pretty fun game!

the transition from gigantamax to rat happens in an instant, but it takes a moment for his pikachu to remember she has speed and agility on her side again. she feels it out with a few experimental steps, then bares her teeth at the shadow ball the sylveon raises over her head. [break][break]taking from her fight with Victoria Beckett 's lucario, she uses quick attack to try and duck under the sphere of dark energy and headbutt her opponent.[break][break]

It's a smart move. The quick attack connects and throws Sugar's aim off kilter. Her ball goes flying uselessly to the side and slams into the edge of the arena instead.[break][break]

With her ribbons free she makes a grab for the wiggly rat instead. It's not an attack, not really— more of an attempt to get Pikachu away from her to avoid any more painful headbutts. Sugar places her down almost gently before she goes in for another attack, a psyshock that radiates from her glowing ribbons and tries to encircle the rat in a barrier psychic energy that quickly closes in.[break][break]

the ground flips beneath pikachu's paws as sylveon picks her up, then rights itself once she's gently set down again. the not-attack makes her blink, confused, allowing the psyshock to box her in. [break][break]"c'mon, lock in!" aaron calls out, voice rough and impatient. [break][break]the psychic barrier surrounding her closes in, corralling her as she tries to scuttle toward the center of the attack. she looks this way and that, gauging where to put uncertain feet, then decides attacking might be her best way out of this. [break][break]her cheeks spark, countering with a swift thunderbolt.[break][break]
